International gymnast visits Gems Hampshire School

Tuesday, 28th February 2012

On Friday 24 February GEMS Hampshire School received a very special visit from Sports for Schools.

Danny Lawrence, the current Team England Gymnastic Captain treated the children to an exclusive demonstration of his gymnastic expertise following a fun based physical exercise class. Danny has been to 3 World Championships and was Captain of Team England who won Silver at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Sports for Schools visited The Hampshire School as part of its ‘2012 Inspirational Campaign’ initiative, with a mission to inspire 2,012 children to enrol in sports clubs throughout the UK in the build up to the London Olympics, as a result of the inspirational demonstrations from Great British sporting champions.

The children raised money for sporting equiptment, for the charity Action for Children, and to help support Great British athletes who will be competing in the Olympic Games.

Mr. Kennelly, Head of PE & Sports at The Hampshire School said: “Sports for Schools is a great initiative, it is fantastic to see such talented athletes work alongside teachers to deliver such an engaging campaign. The children worked incredibly hard to raise money and were so impressed by Danny’s performance, it was a great day.”

Sports for Schools was setup in 2005 by former Great Britain Gymnast, Ben Brown. Ben featured heavily in the Back the Bid Campaign which eventually saw London win as host nation of the 2012 Olympic Games.
