Bangers and Beer

Friday, 1st July 2011
Wholefoods Supermarket, High Street, Kensington.

A bubbling, freshly brewed, and massively refreshing Beer and Bangers stall opens for the summer at the High Street Kensington Wholefoods Supermarket.

This summer, beer lovers in the Royal Borough, (if you're not one yet, you'll soon be converted!) will be treated to large refillable bottles of beer from the Wholefoods' Supermarket beer counter.

The bottles, better known as 'growlers' are inspired by an American measure of beer. As I'm sure you know, Americans like their food and drink supersized. The name 'growler' originated in the late 19th century, and refers to the sloshing sound made by the beer as it would have been carried home in pails.

The British beers available are:

Brewdog - a beer made by two friends, in small batches on the rugged North East coast of Scotland. It is highly flavoured and innovative, with a Brewdog surprise bite.London Lager – Brewed by Meantime Brewery, London- based in Greenwich, which, despite being only a century old, looks to centuries past for inspiration for its British beers.

Redemption Beer - An authentically artisan beer, brewed at Redemption Brewery, a microbrewery in Tottenham, North London, and produced using only natural ingredients.

The Wholefoods Supermarket also stocks sausages freshly made by chefs. If curiosity or the desire to mix sausages with beer takes over, they will inform you which sausage goes with each beer, and they will introduce you to new sausage cooking techniques such as poaching the sausage in beer prior to cooking. A tantalising taste bud pleasure.

Empty bottles cost £3.69 for a small bottle, or £3.99 for a large refillable bottle. Beer prices range from £3.99-£9.49, depending on the beer of your choice.

Wholefoods Supermarket is located at 63-97 Kensington High Street, London W8 5SE, and is openMonday to Saturday 8am - 10pm. Sundays 12 - 6 pm.
