Sir,
It is hard to see how the UK's projected future electricity demand and energy security can be met without an element of new nuclear power, to replace some of the existing nuclear stations as they come to the end of their lives.
In considering the recently published figures for the Sellafield clean-up it is worth remembering that a large proportion of the costs have arisen as a result of the early ...
Sir,
Through the pages of your newspaper, I would like to draw attention to our new scholarships for students studying engineering.
Students who get three grade ‘A’s at A Level (or equivalent) are now eligible for a scholarship of £1,000 per year.
The Institution of Engineering and Technology’s (IET) new Diamond Jubilee Scholarships will reward students who achieve three grade ‘A’s at A Level (or three ‘A’ grade Advanced Highers or five ‘A’ ...
Dear Editor,
You may have seen me on the TV this month. Not in my usual guise, as a comedian, actor, purveyor of whimsy, but in an advert talking about prostate cancer.
I read an article about the number of men affected by prostate cancer and I was shocked by the figures, and being a bloke of about the age when the prostate can start to be an issue, I felt compelled ...
Dear Editor,
October 10th marked World Mental Health Day. A staggering 71% of children with autism also have a mental health problem, such as depression. In addition, a third of adults with autism told us that they had developed a severe mental health problem as a result of a lack of support. Yet autism is not a mental health problem and people with autism can and do enjoy good mental health ...
Dear editor There is something missing from your very enjoyable paper. It is a ''lonely heart'' column or even a ''just ''looking for a friend'' ' column for the more mature resident of RBKC, the 60 to 70 year old and beyond. You notify us of so many wonderful events we can enjoy in the area, but without a companion it is difficult to ''get up and go’’. Many of us intelligent elders of the tribe, lonely ...
Dear reader, I am delighted to be in the kitchen, baking to mark a particularly special occasion; the children’s charity Place2Be’s 18th birthday! And I would love it (and worship at your shrines) if, to show your support, you would join me in taking part in Place2Be’s glorious Big Birthday Bake Off which runs throughout September and October! Over the past 18 years Place2Be has been working tirelessly in schools across the UK, giving children vital ...
Dear Editor, National charity Contact the Elderly is urging the thousands of Games Makers who helped to deliver a truly successful Olympic and Paralympics Games this summer to volunteer for other causes to ensure the legacy lives on. Now that sporting events have drawn to a close, the Games Makers must be congratulated on their remarkable effort and commitment. The thousands of volunteers who gave up their time for free have truly inspired the nation, ...
Dear Editor, We have read your latest issue with interest. It is good that Carlyle's house is preserved as it was. We live below the flat of Alfred Hitchcock. Sadly local councillors took no interest in preserving its panelling, though people stop outside daily to photograph the blue plaque. JMW Turner's cottage at 119 Cheyne Walk is also neglected and has been repeatedly altered. The Chelsea Society once took some interest in its fate, but not ...
This summer is an exciting time for everyone in England as we prepare to welcome the Olympics to our country. Billions of people around the world will be tuning in to watch the action unfold so we need to make sure England is a sight for sore eyes – not an eyesore.
That’s why we’ve launched a new initiative called Show the World - part of our national Love Where You live campaign – to ...
Dear Editor,
Volunteers from the Kensington and Chelsea area are needed to help scientists test technology which could benefit people’s health in the future. The research by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine will use homes as mini laboratories with hi-tech remote sensors set up to enable scientists to unobtrusively track people’s everyday activities and movement of objects over a four-month period. The electronic system – known as a real-time location system - is ...
Dear Sir,
Everyone appreciates the importance of the local pub in the life of the community, and everyone knows that running a pub is very hard work at the best of times. So I’m glad of the opportunity to tell your readers about a new opportunity for pub managers who find that the way regulations are enforced is making their lives difficult or who have had really good advice from regulators and wish others could learn ...
A national charity is calling on school and college staff from across Kensington and Chelsea to come forward and receive free training about epilepsy and how to manage the condition.
The course, run by experts from the charity Young Epilepsy, is for all staff working in education including; teachers, lecturers, teaching assistants, special needs co-ordinators and school nurses. The training is free of charge thanks to the generous support of the Big Lottery Fund.
Young Epilepsy’s ...
Many thanks for providing us with a copy of Kensington and Chelsea Today.
I was interested in the feature about Joyce Grenfell’s blue plague which I would agree she deserves. I think that it is rather debatable whether she composed ‘I’m Going to see You Today’ although she may well have co-written it. The song is attributed to Richard Adinsell who is best known for ‘The Warsaw Concerto’. He also probably ...
I was lucky enough to win the fourth Wolfe Cryptic Crossword in Kensington and Chelsea Today. I just wanted to say how thrilled I was to receive your letter and how much my husband and I enjoyed our Sunday lunch at the Tangerine Dream Café. We ate outside on the terrace on the 31st of October, a ridiculously warm autumn day.
Tom at the café and Ramsey at the Physic Garden ...
Last month we printed a letter from Mr Abelson, OBE, saying that the re-offending rate at Latchmere Prison was below 60% it should have read that the re-offending rate is below 6%. We have re-printed Mr Abelson’s letter below with the correct details:
Dear Editor,
I was most interested in Jonathan Aitkin’s Profile in your newspaper.
Jonathan was quite right to praise the regime at HMRP Latchmere House. Whilst the reoffending rate across ...
