Music therapy for care home residents in Kensington

Friday, 10th August 2012
A local Bupa care home in Kensington is preparing to host a special concert on Wednesday 22 August so that residents and visitors can enjoy the therapeutic benefits of live music.

The concert has been organised by Music in Hospitals (MiH), a leading national charity which provides professionally performed concerts to help improve the lives of those in care or with long-term illnesses.

As part of MiH’s specially designed ‘Musical Memories in Care Homes’ project, cellist Flora Allison and pianist Judith Flint will be performing at Bupa’s The Kensington Nursing Home from 2.30pm.

Home manager, Christine Small, said,

“Music is such a huge part of everyday life but a live performance really is very special. We love listening to music as it brings everyone together, lifts spirits and certainly gets toes tapping.

“Residents who may normally struggle with memories, such as those with dementia, suddenly find themselves recalling words and songs, so we know this performance will be a real treat.”

The concert is one of a series being played across London. Anyone who would like to attend one of the concerts should call 0845 600 4622.

Music in Hospital’s chief executive, Steve Rowland-Jones, said,

“Our musicians are very good at getting listeners involved, whether it’s entertaining a large group or really tuning into individual needs. We are very much looking forward to working with residents and staff in Bupa’s care homes to help bring music and memories to life.”

Bupa’s community and partnerships executive, Siobhan Drane, added,

“Music in Hospitals is a fantastic charity and we know our residents will really appreciate the chance to enjoy the music and engage with such talented musicians.”
